Boeing AB-767/332 "Delta Air Lines" (592KB). The Boeing 767 made its first flight on September 26, 1981, and went into service with United in September of the following year. Delta Air Lines (together with American) was the launch customer for a version that possessed true transcontinental range, and introduced its new type on December 15, 1982. McDonnell Douglas AB-MD-88 "Delta Air Lines" (4.93MB). The Boeing MD-80 series is a quiet, fuel-efficient twinjet, and was certified by the Federal Aviation Administration in August 1980. The MD-80 series entered airline service in October 1980. Delta Airlines became the launch customer for the MD-88, when an order for 80 aircraft was announced in late 1985. Douglas AB-A-1J Skyraider (3.06MB). The achievements of the Skyraider during the Korean War caused one Navy Commander to claim that the Skyraider was "the best and most effective close-support airplane in the world." Generally referred to as "Sandy" during the Vietnam War, Skyraiders were used as escorts for rescue helicopters on recovery missions for downed crew members, providing fire suppression to hold the enemy at bay while the helicopters performed the rescue. Grumman AB-F-9F2 Panther (1.13MB). The F-9F2 Panther, a mainstay of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine forces in Korea, were the first carrier jets to fly in combat. They shot down two Yakovlev Yak-9's on their first mission in July, 1950. In November, 1950, Lt. Cdr. W.T. Amen, C.O. of VF-111, was the first carrier pilot to shoot down a Soviet MiG-15. North American AB-F-86D "Dog" Sabre (2.54MB). The F-86D, known as the "Dog Sabre", was an all-weather interceptor. Heavier and more complex than previous jet aircraft designs, it had an extremely advanced radar developed by the Hughes company with the scanner contained within a large radome above the air inlet. North American AB-F-86E and AB-F-86F Sabre (2.58MB). "E" Model: The F-86E took its place in history with amazing successes against the more agile MiG-15's during the Korean War. The E and F models flew most of the classic dogfights in that conflict, with their six nose-mounted machine guns proving deadly when in close. "F" Model: The major production version of the Sabre was the F-86F. The F-86F Sabre was basically a more "powerful" version of the F-86E. The introduction of the F into combat in Korea went a long way to closing the high-altitude performance gap between the Sabre and the MiG-15. No longer could the MiG's zoom and climb through Sabre formations with impunity, and the Sabre pilots could now close on the MiG's at any altitude, even during a climb. Boeing AB-B-47E Stratojet (1.52MB). The B-47 Stratojet was the first jet-powered strategic bomber to serve with USAF. The prototype first flew in 1947 with the E version being the first major upgrade. Each SAC Bomb Wing in the 1950's had 45 combat-ready B-47's as well recon and EW variants. By: AB_Lt_Cmd_Riker.

Boeing AB-B-52H Stratofortress (2.40MB). Air Combat Command's B-52 is a long-range, heavy bomber that can perform a variety of missions. The bomber is capable of flying at high subsonic speeds at altitudes up to 50,000 feet (15,166.6 meters). It can carry nuclear or precision guided conventional ordnance with worldwide precision navigation capability.. Convair AB-B-58A Hustler (6.05MB). The delta-wing Hustler was the first operational supersonic bomber. Distinctive B-58 features included a sophisticated inertial guidance, navigation and bombing system, slender "wasp-waist" fuselage, and extensive use of heat- resistant honeycomb sandwich skin panels in the wings and fuselage. The thin fuselage prevented internal carriage of bombs so an external droppable two-compartment pod beneath the fuselage contained extra fuel and a nuclear weapon, reconnaissance equipment, or other specialized gear. The Navy's experience in the Korean War showed the need for a new long-range strike aircraft with high subsonic performance at tree-top height, to permit under-the-radar penetration of enemy defenses, and to be capable of finding and hitting small targets in any weather. Lockheed AB-F-104A Starfighter (1.69MB). The F-104 Starfighter is a high-performance day and night fighters powered by an axial-flow, turbojet engine with afterburner. The "A" models are designed for cruise at high subsonic speeds and combat at high supersonic speeds. Notable features of the aircraft include extremely thin flight surfaces, short straight wings with negative dihedral, irreversible hydraulically powered ailerons, and a controllable horizontal stabilizer. Mikoyan AB-MiG-17 Fresco (2.45MB). The MiG-17 is a refined version of the famous MiG-15 of the Korean War. Although similar in appearance, the MiG-17 has more sharply swept wings, an afterburner, better speed and handling characteristics and is about three feet longer. Mikoyan AB-MiG-21MF (2.44MB). A 1950's design, the most widely produced post World War II fighter. Cheap, and easy to maintain. Many nations keep them in service for that reason, and because a wide range of avionics and weapons upgrades are available. Not really designed for ground attack, but can carry 1.5 tons of bombs. Republic AB-F-105G "Wild Weasel" (3.42MB). From 1965 the skies of North Vietnam become more and more deadly for US aircraft because of the increasing numbers of Soviet supplied "Surface-to-Air Missiles", more commonly called SAM's. The best approach to the problem would be to hunt down the enemy SAM radars and "kill them" before they could shoot down US aircraft. This was the start of the program called "Wild Weasel". Boeing AB-AV-8V Harrier (1.51MB). The primary mission of the Harrier is to provide close air support to ground forces. Secondary missions include short range interdiction, fighter escort, deck launched intercept, and combat air patrol. The Harrier II was the first Marine Corps tactical strike platform to arrive in theater during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Fairchild AB-A-10 Warthog (2.22MB). The A-10 Thunderbolt II, also known as the "Warthog", is the first Air Force aircraft specially designed for close air support of ground forces. Lockheed-Martin AB-X-35 Joint Strike Fighter (3.27MB). The Joint Strike Fighter project may be the largest and most important military aircraft program of the early 21st century, and both the military and contractors have placed large stakes on its outcome. The Joint Strike fighter (JSF) is a program designed to develop a family of stealthy, next- generation replacement strike fighter aircraft for the USAF, USN, USMC and the UK Royal navy and Royal Air Force. The X-35C is the carrier variant and will be similar to the Air Force version except it will have a stronger internal structure, landing gear, bigger wing, and arresting hook to allow carrier landings. McDonnell Douglas AB-F-15C Eagle (4.29MB). The F-15 was developed in the early 1970's in response to the Mikoyan MiG-25 Foxbat. The resulting aircraft was in a class of its own, with greater maneuverability and effective range than its Soviet counterpart, as well more advanced targeting systems. Although the F-15 was originally intended to be an interceptor, the dual-seat F-15E variant excelled in the ground attack role in recent conflicts. Bell AB-AH-1S Cobra (2.47MB). The AH-1S Cobra is a two-place, twin-engine attack helicopter capable of land or sea-based operations. It is a quick-reacting, airborne weapon system that can fight close and deep to destroy, disrupt, or delay enemy forces. The Apache is designed to fight and survive during the day, night, and in adverse weather throughout the world. McDonnell Douglas AB-MD-500E "Scorpion" (1.83MB). Designed to fill the light attack role, the relative small size of the Scorpion allows it to attack from behind smaller cover, thus allowing it to get in much closer than her larger cousins like the AH-64 Apache. MIL AB-Mi-24D Hind (2.25MB). The Mi-24, known to NATO as the "Hind", was the first helicopter to enter service with the Russian Air Force as an assault transport and gunship, and was developed on the basis of the Mi-8's propulsion system. Sikorsky AB-UH-60 Blackhawk (1.73MB). The world's most advanced twin-turbine military helicopter.
